The Tale of Wink + Blink

It’s something we’ve learned to roll with at HSW, especially lately. Let us tell you the tale of Wink and Blink, two young animals surrendered to us within a week of each other, each with a story that reminded us just how critical your support is.

Earlier this week, we welcomed a new pup named Blink. His family’s circumstances had changed, and they asked us to take him and his brother into our care. Both dogs passed their behavior assessments with flying colors, and we were excited to help them start their next chapter.

But Blink had a plot twist in store.

Not long after arriving, he began vomiting and showing signs of distress. A vet visit and radiographs revealed a blockage, and emergency surgery was scheduled for that night. Thankfully, Blink came through like a champ and is now resting comfortably.

Just as we were navigating Blink’s medical crisis, we were also caring for Wink, a tiny kitten found as a local stray with a serious eye infection. We were only able to take her in because it aligned with a scheduled visit from Dr. Meg, since we don’t have an on-site vet.

By the time Wink arrived, her eye was already pre-ruptured. We don’t know if it was caused by infection or injury, but we knew immediate action was needed. She was placed in 24/7 foster care with a staff member, and sure enough her eye fully ruptured shortly after. She’ll need surgery once she’s big enough to safely undergo anesthesia, but for now, she’s being monitored around the clock and receiving all the love and medical attention she needs.

These unexpected medical situations, while part of what we do, place a real strain on our resources. Our medical fund continues to be stretched thin, and every emergency delays our ability to take in the next animal in need.

In Blink’s case, the culprit may have been a realistic-looking toy mushroom, a reminder to keep a close eye on what our pets might find “edible.”

Animals like Wink and Blink depend on us, and we depend on you. Every gift helps us say “yes” to the next animal who needs us.
