Pet Surrender

The Humane Society of Walden is a small, limited-admission shelter. We accept owner-surrendered cats and dogs on a case-by-case basis, depending on available space, staffing, and our ability to meet each animal’s individual needs. Before an animal can be accepted into our care, we will review their medical and behavioral history and may request an evaluation.

We understand that making the decision to rehome or surrender a pet can be difficult, and we appreciate your patience while we determine how we may be able to help. Because our available space can change quickly, acceptance is not guaranteed. Please reach out to us with any updates by emailing intake@waldenhumane.org.

A Few Things to Know

• Appointments are required: We are often at or above capacity, so we are unable to accommodate walk-in surrenders. An appointment allows us to make sure we have appropriate space available before an animal arrives.
• Veterinary care: Our ability to accept animals who are not current on vaccinations or have not been spayed or neutered is very limited. If you are able to have your pet brought up to date on veterinary care, it may make placement with HSW or another rescue organization easier.
• Every request is reviewed individually: Unfortunately, we are not able to accept every animal. Intake decisions are based on our current capacity, available resources, and whether we can appropriately and safely meet the animal’s needs.
